A Career In PR
Career development opportunities within the public relations industry are excellent but competition is fierce. Most entrants tend to be graduates, although there is always opportunity for non graduates with relevant work experience and determination. The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) is the main professional body for the PR industry, and publishes a list of approved courses. Working in PR can from time to time involve working outside of the standard office hours, attending evening and weekend launches and events.
Career Development Plan
There is no standard promotion pattern for the PR industry and agencies will vary from an in-house career but one might expect the following career development plan:
- One to two years as a Press Assistant / Junior Account Executive
- Two to three years as an Account Executive
- Two to three years as a Senior Account Executive
- Two to three years as an Account Manager before moving to Associate or Account Director
Day to day in PR and the skills required - Adaptable, good writing skills, social networking, strong organisational skills, interested in the sector they PR to have passion, a team player, contribute to brainstorming ideas, confident, ability to multi-task, friendly, understand the media, understand different demographic groups, good research skills.
It is important to have strong written skills - as you will spend a lot of time writing and editing - this could be shareholder reports, annual reports, press releases, strategies, film scripts, articles and features, speeches, booklets, newsletters, client web content, trend reports, reporting, competition copy.
Media Liaison – A good PR not only knows how to develop relationships with press, influencers and key contacts but also has the skills to maintain them.
Client Liaison – A PR needs the ability to react quickly to a client’s request. More importantly the ability to pre-empt a client’s requirement and to be prepared in advance. Boudoir PR works very closely with its clients as an integral part of each client’s team, we are involved in decision making at every level concerning the brand.
Events and Launches – Another aspect of PR is organizing events from conception through to execution and post mortem reporting. These can be press conferences, press junkets, exhibitions, press days, fashion shows, store launches, competitions, road shows and more. These are all used to gain the attention of specific target groups.
Research, evaluation and reporting - a public relations practitioner will need to be able to perform quick in-depth analysis and fact gathering. This might be trend reporting, media analysis, competitor analysis and so on. Reporting back to the client or a board is also a key area.

Boudoir PR is looking to fill several positions within its ‘Fashion’ & ‘Health & Beauty’ teams to work across a number of diverse UK and International accounts.
We are looking for Account Executives and Senior Account Executives. The candidates must be extremely proactive, confident on the phones, with the ability to interact well with clients and press. In addition, the ideal candidates will have a university degree as the role requires immaculate written communication skills for drafting press releases, contact reports and status reports.
AE – A minimum of 1 year’s appropriate experience is required, which must include previous agency experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills / Creative thinker - ability to brainstorm / Fashion-obsessed / Beauty junkie / Confident, bubbly and outgoing /Self-motivated /Impeccably organised, with experience of managing sample send outs and returns/Media aware.
SAE - A minimum of 2 year’s appropriate experience is required, which must include previous agency experience. The candidate must have all the above plus strong media contacts to be able to hit the floor running. Innate understanding of audiences and media targets/ Strategic thinker / Impeccably organised. Experience of managing client/ client-facing. The candidate must be highly creative as the role will require a lot of brainstorming, event organising, celebrity liaison and trend reporting.
